First you need the layout to be a PDF. Click Share and click the layout export.

Make sure that it is saved as type PDF.
Open this PDF in Adobe illustrator, and go to the file, click the save as tab. Here, you have the option to change the file type, and you should choose AI file type.

When you open the file in Illustrator later, a warning message will pop up. Be sure to select Update (not OK) or the legend text will disappear.
