- Using a web browser, search for "ipums nhgis" and select the result as shown below or go directly to: https://www.nhgis.org/
- Click the Log In button at the top right of the page.
- Use your IPUMS NHGIS credentials to log in to IPUMS NHGIS.
- Once logged in, click the IPUMS NHGIS logo in the top left of the screen to launch home page.
- Click the Get Data button located in the center of the screen.
- Under the Apply Filters tree, click Geographic Levels.
- In the 'Geographic Levels' pop-up window, click the green circle under CENSUS TRACT and then click SUBMIT.
- Under the Apply Filters tree, click Years.
- In the 'Years' pop-up window, check the box for 1980 in the Decennial Years column and click SUBMIT.
- Under the Apply Filters tree, click Topics.
- In the 'Topics' pop-up window, click the green circle to the left of Total Population and click SUBMIT.
- Your Apply Filters tree should look like the below image.
- Under the 'Select Data' section, click the Source Tables tab. Click the green circle to the left of the second record for the 1980_STF1 data table.
- Under the 'Select Data' section, click the GIS Files tab. Click the green circle to the left of the first record for 2000 TIGER/Line.
- In 'Data Cart' located in the top right corner of the page, click the Continue button.
- Click Continue again and click Submit. Leave all default settings.
- Your data will now be added to a queue and should be available to download in 1-2 minutes. The next step is to download this data and conduct a Tabular Join. This step is more advanced than what
