Managing Junk Mail in Outlook 365

 

The Junk Email Filter in Outlook can identify messages that are probably spam and will move them directly to the Junk Email folder.

 

It is important to periodically check your Junk Email folder to ensure that any legitimate did not get filtered there. The steps below will guide you on how to mark messages as junk mail, mark messages as not junk, and how to add senders to the safe sender list.

Adding the Junk Email folder to Favorites

To ensure that you do not miss any legitimate messages, periodically check your Junk Email folder. You can add it to Favorites, so it shows up at the top of the left-hand pane in Outlook.

 

  1. Right-click on the Junk Email folder in Outlook and click on Add to Favorites.
  2. The Junk Email folder will now be added to the Favorites section located in the top of the left-hand pane in Outlook.

 

Marking an email message as Not Junk

 

If you find an email message in the Junk Email folder and would like future messages from the sender to be delivered to your Inbox and not the Junk Email folder, follow the steps below.

  1. Right-click on the message and scroll down and mouse over the Junk menu item and then click on Not Junk in the side menu that appears.
  2. Click the OK button in the Mark ad Not Junk window that appears.

 

Blocking a Sender

 

If you feel that a message is spam and would no longer like to receive messages from the sender, follow the steps below to add them to your Block Sender’s list.

 

  1. Right-click on the message and scroll down and mouse over the Junk menu item and then click on Block Sender in the side menu that appears.
  2. Click OK to acknowledge that the sender has been added to the Blocked Senders List in the window that appears.

 

 

 

 

Junk Email Options

 

By default, the Junk Email Filter is turned on and the protection level is set to No Automatic Filtering. You can change the protection level by following the steps below.

  1. Right-click on any email message and scroll down and mouse over the Junk menu item and then click on Junk Email Options… in the side menu that appears.


  2. Select your preferred filter setting according to the descriptions below.



  3. If you would like to add a sender to your Safe Sender list, you can do so by clicking on the Safe Senders tab, and click on the Add button. Type in the email address and click OK.



  4. You can also review who is on your Blocked Sender list. Click on the Blocked Senders tab, and click on the Add or Remove button to manage the list.
