1.  GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS

The call number is not written on a sound recording but is given on a white flag.

The call number is penciled on each piece of printed material that fits inside the case and circulates with the recording.  If the guide is separate from the sound recording or is for more than one sound recording, it is given a separate item record and barcode, an item type of BOOK and the descriptive term “Text” in the description field of the item record and the Item policy should be changed to Item circulates for 4 weeks.

2.  SPECIFIC FORMATS

2.1  Compact Discs

The basic circulating unit is the container.  Piece count reflects the total number of information-bearing items inside the jewel case (discs + booklet(s)).  The barcode is placed on the bottom right front of the jewel case.

Examples:

Standard single disc:  Barcode on bottom right front of jewel case.  Piece count in the Item record is 2 (disc + booklet).

Multiple discs in single container, booklet inside jewel case:  Barcode jewel case.  Piece count reflects number of discs + number of booklets.

Multiple jewel cases and/or loose booklets in cardboard sleeve or boxed sets:  Barcode each loose part (jewel cases, loose booklets) on bottom right front.  Piece count reflects only the number for the barcoded items.

2.2  Cassettes

Only on rare occasions do we receive cassette tapes.  The barcode is placed on the front (clear plastic side) of the container.  Cassettes and any printed materials of informational value are included in the piece count.  Most multi-cassette issues have separate containers and should be individually barcoded, with separate piece counts.  Some issues do have a single box with two or more cassettes inside; in these cases the box should be barcoded, with piece count reflecting total number of cassettes and booklets.

2.3  LP’s, reel-to-reel tapes, 78s

Fondren Library no longer collects these types of mediae.

3.  MARKING

Sound recordings are placed on the shelf labeled “CDs + CD-ROMs to be marked” near the Marking Table.
