In order to provide you online access to high-quality online information sources, Fondren Library has to negotiate contracts or licenses with the publishers. While we try to avoid agreeing to a contract that limits rights beyond those afforded by U.S. copyright, any license terms that deviate from U.S. law override U.S. laws regarding fair use and scholarly research.

You should always assume that resources should be used for research and teaching only (not, for example, for private consulting or contract work), and that the following activities are always prohibited: systematic downloading of content, including the use of any type of harvesting software; systematic sharing of content with someone outside the Rice community (current faculty, students and staff); republishing content, including by means of posting on a publicly accessible website; obstructing publisher's markings or copyright markings.

Authorized Users
Defines who may use the online information resource, further refined by specifying which qualify for remote access. "Walk in users" is a stock phrase of the software and designates anyone without a current Rice computing account (alumni accounts do not qualify for remote access - see information regarding our Alumni Digital Library)

Fair Use Clause Indicator
Affirms statutory fair use rights under U.S. copyright law - the agreement does not restrict these rights for the user community

Digitally Copy
The right of authorized users to download and digitally copy a reasonable portion of the materials

Print Copy
The right of authorized users to print a portion of the licensed materials

Scholarly Sharing
The right of authorized users and/or the library to transmit hard copy or an electronic copy of a portion of the licensed materials to a third party for personal, scholarly, educational, scientific or professional use. Specific limitations on scope may be noted, such as materials may only be shared within the United States or may not be shared to people in specific countries

ILL Electronic (email)
The right to provide materials via interlibrary loan by way of email

ILL Print or Fax
The right to provide the licensed materials via interlibrary loan by way of print or facsimile transmission only

ILL Record Keeping
The requirement to keep records of interlibrary loan activity and provide reports at periodic intervals or upon request [usually refused by Fondren]; may also record limitations re geography or type of library to which loans may be sent

ILL Secure Electronic
The right to provide materials via interlibrary loan by way of a secure electronic transmission software such as Rice's ILLiad system

Course Reserve
The right to make copies of the licensed materials and store them under controls for reserve reading in conjunction with specific courses of instruction. Rights to provide electronic versus paper reserves will be noted when specified by the license

Electronic Link
The right to link to licensed materials.  See our resource page on tips and assistance regarding those resources that permit linking to individual articles.

Course Pack Electronic
The right to use the materials in collections of materials assembled in an electronic format by faculty members for use by students in a class for purposes of instruction

Course Pack Print
The right to use materials in collections of materials assembled in a print format by faculty members for use by students in a class for purposes of instruction
