Accessing the Data

If you would like to have the footprints of buildings in your map, you can follow this process. Building footprints are the outlines of the space the building occupies. No height values are attached to these footprints, and only some of them have name or owner information.

The most recent building footprints the GDC has available are from 2012. Negotiations for an updated file are underway, but the timeline for receiving them is indefinite.

  1. In ArcGIS Pro, in the Catalog Pane, right click on the Folders and choose "add folder connection" then navigate to O:\Cataloged\Local\HoustonGalvestonAreaCouncil then choose LiDAR and add it as a new folder connection.
  2. In the Catalog Pane, expand the LiDAR folder.
  3. Drag the feature class LiDAR_Building_Footprints_2018_Harris_County from the LiDAR_2018_Building_Footprints.gdb database to your map window.

This file is also very large, so be sure to clip it. However, to make sure you don’t cut buildings in half, be sure to use the 2nd method for clipping.
