Welcome to my page!

My name is Serena Barbieri. I am a big data historian and a Ph. D. candidate, Department of History, Rice University. I created this space as part of my dissertation work to take and share notes and sources about my research on convict leasing in Texas.

I am currently creating a database of Texas convicts from the erection of the first state prison, at Huntsville, to the final dismissal of the convict leasing system (1914). My dissertation specifically focuses on the convicts who worked for railroad companies. I am interested in questions of race, labor conditions, profit, capitalism, gender, and punishment.
