Boot you virtual machine from a physical disk partition.
Before VMWare Server version 2.0 (including v1.0, and GSX server), there was a option to select physical disk during the process of creating a new virtual machine. For version 2.0, the feature seems disappeared. But you can add a physical disk by adding a passthrough SCSI Device. To figure out which device points to which disk, you can check dmesg on your host.

Panelnoformat
 dmesg |grep sg

I successfully boot my guest Ubuntu on my physical disk. But I failed to boot Windows XP, which gives me a blue screen after the windows logo screen. Here is a link which tell me to prepare a profile on the gust XP, but It didn't help. Finally, I just gave up to cut off the loss of time. http://www.vmware.com/support/gsx3/doc/disks_dualboot_gsx.html
