Our speaker will be  Joyce Myoung-Ji Jang, M.M., a Shepherd School graduate, a versatile international performer and dedicated music educator will present a short program, including a violin sonata by Brahms, music by Piazzolla, Elgar and others. Ms. Jang was a child prodigy in Seoul Korea, where she was born, and has won many awards and performed with the Mardi Chamber Orchestra in Seoul, the Dallas symphony, the Spoleto USA orchestra, the Richmond Symphony, the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra as concertmaster, and many other places. She is also a chamber musician and has played with the American String Quartet, the Concord String Quartet and others.

“Read Across the Globe” volunteering event at local elementary schools, 8:30am to 11:30am. This is an effort organized by Connect 4 Literacy as they as we team up with Points of Light, Deloitte LLP and Volunteer Houston to break the Guinness World Record for the number of children read to within a 24-hour period. The current world record is 238,000 children, and they hope to smash it by reading to 300,000 children across the globe! This worthy cause to promote children’s literacy has been brought to the Club’s attention by our honorary member Ping Sun, and many of our members have taken up the challenge. See details on how to sign up to volunteer. If you do volunteer, please make sure to send mail to welcome@rice.edu, the University Public Affairs office, and let them know what size T-shirt you are wearing, so they can order one for you. This will identify you as a member of the Rice team.

Patrick Palmer, Faculty Chair and Dean, The Glassell School of Art, will present a talk about Houston Arts, the Glassell School of Fine Art and its future plans. Patrick is a very successful Houston painter, and maintains a studio on Winter Street, in parallel with his teaching and leadership duties at Glassell.

Roberta H. Anding, M.S., R.D./L.D., C.D.E., C.S.S.D., will present an informative talk with the latest on nutrition.

She is instructor in the Kinesiology Department of Rice University, dietitian for Rice University Athletics, faculty member of the Baylor College of Medicine in the Department of Pediatrics, Section of Adolescent Medicine and Sports Medicine where she is an instructor in nutrition as well as the clinical dietitian in the Adolescent Medicine and Sports Medicine Clinic. Roberta is also currently the sports dietitian for the Houston Astros MLB franchise and in the past, held the same position with the Houston Texans NFL franchise for 12 years. Roberta also consults with the Houston Ballet.

Our walking group will meet at 9:00am at the Parking lot of the McGovern Centennial Gardens. The Gardens are located at 1500 Hermann Drive. The parking area is at the east end of the gardens. The Gardens are across from The Health Museum and the Park Plaza Hospital. There are nearby walking trails in addition to the actual gardens so that we can vary our walks, and the pace is up to the walkers; all speeds are welcome!
