I am working on a comprehensive database of Texas convicts from the opening of the first prison at Huntsville to the demise of the Texas convict leasing system.

This is the data I am gathering:

  1. demographic data (name, age, birthplace, place of residence, race, job, marital status)
  2. criminal data (crime, term of conviction, place, expiration of sentence)
  3. conviction data: outcome (discharge, pardon, commutation, escape); punishment (reason, method, length); transfers.
  4. convict labor data: prison labor; convict leasing (name of the individual/company, dates, tasks, punishment, supervising guards)
  5. readmission for escaping or a new conviction.

The links on this page are for now accessible only to my advisors.

The database will be accessible to the public when my dissertation is completed. However, if you are a fellow researcher, a believer in social justice and fair punishment of crimes, or a member of the community looking for one of the many unwilling actors of this story, you can contact me at serenabarbieri at rice dot edu. I will be glad to help by sharing pieces of information if I have them or keeping an eye on what is important to you when researching.
