Section VIII, Chapter E

Processing Sound Recordings

1.  GENERAL INSTRUCTIONSPROCESSING SOUND RECORDINGS

The call number is not written on a sound recording but is given on a white flag.

The The call number is penciled on each piece of printed material that fits inside the case and circulates with the recording.  If the guide is separate from the sound recording or is for more than one sound recording, it is given a separate item record and barcode, with a an item type of BOOK-CD and the descriptive term such as “Text” as the last element of the call number.

2.

...

 SPECIFIC FORMATS

2.1  Compact Discs

The basic circulating unit is the container.  Piece count reflects the total number of information-bearing items inside the jewel case (discs + bookletsbooklet(s)).  The barcode is placed on the bottom right front of the jewel case.

...

Multiple jewel cases and/or loose booklets in cardboard sleeve or boxed sets:  Barcode each loose part (jewel cases, loose booklets) on bottom right front.  Piece count reflects only the number for the barcoded items.

Cassettes

2.2  Cassettes

Only on rare occasions do we receive cassette tapes.  The barcode is placed on the front (clear plastic side) of the container.  Cassettes and any printed materials of informational value are included in the piece count.  Most multi-cassette issues have separate containers and should be individually barcoded, with separate piece counts.  Some issues do have a single box with two or more cassettes inside; in these cases the box should be barcoded, with piece count reflecting total number of cassettes and booklets.

LP’s

2.3  LP’s, reel-to-reel tapes, 78s

Fondren Library no longer collects these types of mediae.

3.  MARKING

LP’s already have pocket and date slips.  The barcode should be placed on the pocket, wherever that may be:  on inner sleeve, on interior of container for boxed sets, on first record of 2-disc sets, etc.  The piece count in the item record should reflect the total number of discs.  Program notes should be disregarded unless they are printed on a separate pamphlet.  If a pamphlet is laid in the box or sleeve, it should be counted as a piece.  If a pamphlet is separately bound or otherwise removed from container, it should be barcoded separately, with a descriptive term such as “Text” as the last element of the call number.

Sound recordings are placed on the shelf labeled “CDs + CD-ROMs to be marked” near the Marking Table.
