Cataloging Visual Materials

1.  INTRODUCTION

 

VISUAL MATERIALS CATALOGING PROCEDURES

Videorecordings are searched on OCLC most efficiently with the format qualifier vis.

Video materials cataloged on this format include VHS cassette tapes, 4 ¾ in. DVD optical discs, and 12 ½ in. videodiscs.

Videos with copy are cataloged by the Senior Copy Catalogers.  Those lacking copy are cataloged by an Original Cataloger.

Video materials cataloged on this format include VHS cassette tapes and 4 ¾ in. DVD optical discs.

Apply AACR2, Chapter 7, as well as LC Rule Interpretations, and Bibliographic Formats and Standards.  Assign subject headings from LC Subject headingsHeadings and Cataloging Service Bulletins. Create  Create call numbers in accordance with LC Classification Schedules and Additions and Changes.

In fixed fields use the following values:  RT=g, E/L= 7.


3.  CREATING PROVISIONAL RECORDS FOR VIDEOS

 

3.1  Fixed fields.  Use the following values in the fixed fields:

  • Rec_Type= g
  • Enc_Lvl= 7

3.2  Variable fields.

4.  CATALOGING VIDEORECORDINGS

4.1  Fixed fields.  Note 1. Check fixed fields and note this variation for visual materials:

  Ctry = Country of Production.

4.2  Variable fields. Editing variable fields:

250.  Include the edition statement (if available).  The edition statement 250  Edition statement – can be confusing for DVDs. Be careful to distinguish between edition statements related to the item in hand, and series statements relating to the item being part of a publisher’s collection. Statements  Statements such as those listed below should be treated as edition statements, whether they carry the word “edition” or not.

  • Feature films 2000 and earlier have call number PN1997 with Cutter number for title.
  • Feature films 2001 and later have call number PN1997.2 with Cutter number for title.

  • 1st Cutter for composer,

  • 2nd Cutter for uniform title.

5.  ITEM TYPES AND HOLDING RECORDS

 

All visual materials are at the Circulation Desk, location = CIRC-DESK.

Videotape1.  Used Videotape1     Used for all except feature films and specifically designated tapes.  These circulate for one week.

DVD-video1   video1Used for all except feature films and specifically designated DVDs. These circulate 1 week.

Videotape2     Videotape2 Used for feature films and specifically designated tapes.  RESERVE location circulates for two hours; ART-DESK or MUS-DESK circulates Circulates for 3 days.

Holding records.  Holdings Holdings records are created as for multi-volume sets.
