For serials or sets that have multiple series, SIRSI places the |z after the “s” and before the “v.” or “no.” SIRSI does not supply |z before a date in a call number. This is a problem with serials or monographic sets that go to the LSC. If the |z is not in the record, or is done incorrectly, patrons can't access the volumes through the public recall process. These problems are usually found by Kerry Keck or by Reference staff when the problem is identified through a patron request An e-mail will be sent to DBM from Kerry or the Reference person requesting that they be fixed. Sometimes Mang can perform a global change, but often, if some have the |z in the correct place and others do not, they must be fixed one at a time.
, the base call number (the part that is the same for every issues or volume with that title) goes in the MARC Holdings record, in subfields $$h and $$i of the 852 field. The class number goes in the $$h subfield, and the Cutter number goes in the $$i subfield:

          One Cutter number:        $$h CD5381 $$i .S78

          Two Cutter numbers:      $$h PN2357.A1 $$i .R65

Any item specific information (volume number and/or date, etc.) goes in the Description field of the Item record in Alma.

This sometimes causes confusion with serials that have multiple series. If the entire serial title only covers a single series, the series numbering goes in the MARC Holdings record 852 field as part of the base call number. If the title includes multiple series, the series numbering goes in the Description field of the Item Record. This comes up with serials that have multiple series:

        Examples:

v.1-v.10                            will appear in call number record as      |zv10                      The Item Record's Description field will contain: v.1-v.10

        s.1 v.1-s.1 v.10                                                                          10          The Holdings record will contain: s.1 |zvin subfield $$i and the Item Record's Description field will contain: v.1-v.10

        s.2 v.1-s.2 3 v.10                                                                          s.2|zv.1-v.10

The |z must be moved for each volume with the “z” after the “s:”

       |zs.1 v.1

       |zs.1 v.2 etc.

       |zs.2 v.1

10          Both the series and vol. numbers will be in the Item Record's Description field; for ex.: s.2,v.1

        |zs.2 v.2 etc.

Serials that have only years to denote volume numbering will need to have |z placed in front of each year.
have the year included in the Item Record Description field (not the base call number on the Ho;ldings Record):

          Holdings Record:     852 01  $$b FONDREN $$c STACKS $$h GN2 .$$i A1

          Item Record:            Description: 2018          GN2 .A1|z1969    etc.
