Background
The Leisure Reading Collection was created in response to a campus-wide survey of library users and is designed to meet the needs of users wanting non-academic and lighter reading. It also offers an opportunity for Fondren to feature popular and award-winning books and other titles of general interest. The collection consists of around 300 fiction and non-fiction titles. The contents will fluctuate as new titles are added and older and less popular titles are removed and transferred to Stacks. Leisure books are located on the shelves facing the South Reading Room.
Procedure for Approval LEISUREBKS
Approximately 10-15 new titles are received on Approval every 8-12 weeks. These are delivered by Acqusitions to the shelves in B52C. The Reference Librarian will review titles on a monthly basis and may pull a few to go directly to STACKS. Ttiles to be added to the Leisure Collection will be tagged with an orange flag. Records for these titles are included with the YBP-US approval records that are loaded weekly by Copy Cataloging staff.
- Catalog as usual but delete the year from the call number in the holdings.

Procedure for Baker & Taylor Books
In 2024 Fondren began leasing a small number of titles per month from Baker & Taylor. These titles arrive with a mylar cover taped around the dust jacket with a property sticker on the back and a red B&T label on the spine. They require separate cataloging and processing as below.
- Export the best quality record from OCLC. Do not update the holdings.
- Catalog in Alma as usual for Leisure titles. In the bib record editor check that Record Actions > Set Management Tags > Export to WorldCat > Don’t Publish is checked.
- Affix the barcode to the bottom right corner of the mylar cover (or on the book if it’s a paperback). DO NOT write the call number on the title page. DO NOT stamp the title page and edges.
- Affix the call number label just above the red B&T label.
These titles will be sent back to Baker & Taylor after several months.
Removal from Leisure Collection
On a periodic basis the Reference Librarian will select those titles which are older or less popular to be removed from the Leisure Reading collection and either added to the general Stacks collection or withdrawn. They are delivered back to Cataloging for item maintenance and processing.
For books going to STACKS:
- Change the Shelving location in Holdings to STACKS.
- Add the year back to the call number in the holdings and on the title page.
- Remove dust jacket and plastic cover.
- Print a new call number label and affix it to the spine or cover.
Records for books that are not being added to the collection are deleted. These books are stamped WITHDRAWN and can then either go to the Better World Books shelf or the staff lounge little free library.
