COMPLETING CATALOGING

To complete cataloging after editing bibliographic records:

  • Check system and LC authority files for names and series.
  • Edit records to conform to name and series authorities and make print-outs for DBM (see Authority Work Guidelines for Catalogers).
  • Check call number index for conflicts and to determine Cutter number.  When a call number conflict exists with related editions, check schedules to determine correct call number and make out boxwork slips for DBM as necessary to change old call number.
  • Load Order or Create Copy as necessary.
  • In Edit Item
    • Check for correct Item Type, Home Location, and Volume.
    • Change Current Location to INPROCESS (with the exception of GOV-MICRO, ART-RARE, MUSIC-RARE, and WRC (except WRC-REF)).
    • In Item Cat2 enter correct cataloging type:  LC = blank or 8 value in encoding level of fixed field; Member = preAACR2 copy with 004 |a member library and |c DLC; Copy = other member copy; Original = RCE input.
    • Check new call number and edit if necessary.
    • Check for correct Class Scheme and Library.
  • Change Created By to cataloger’s logon and Date Created to TODAY.
  • After checking to make sure all descriptive information is correct and editing where appropriate, enter the barcode on the first line of copy information.  If barcode is wanded in the edit item record is automatically updated.  If barcode is keyed update record manually.
  • Affix barcode and pencil call number in middle of title page.  Pencil system control number in lower right corner of title page (see Book Preparation for details and exceptions; see processing sections for non-book materials).
  • Place hardcover and shelve-as-is books on cataloged book truck, paperbacks on In-house Binding shelf or book truck as appropriate (see Binding guidelines for Paperbacks).
  • High priority hardcover and shelve-as-is items are placed on shelf by marking table and paperbacks on in-house binding shelf, with appropriate flags (see Flags).
  • No labels
