Catalogers will input the barcode number into the Alma item record and adhere the barcode to an acid free flag. Call numbers are written on the reverse side of the acid free flag. There are some exceptions if the item is need of preservation (pam binding, box, etc.) Instead the barcode will be clipped to the rare flag and the rare flag will be placed in the book.
Catalogers should keep the item process type as Technical Services as normal. While call numbers may be hand-produced, the item status should still be tracked throughout the workflow and scanned into transit upon completion at the marking table. Rare items needing to be placed in an acid-free box or envelope should be placed on the repair shelf by the marking table. All other rare items should be placed on the WRC shelf. If an acid-free box or an envelope is needed, the cataloger will write such information on a blank flag and place that flag in the book as well
If the rare item is placed in an acid-free box, the barcode should be attached to the lower right-hand corner of the outside of the box. Rare items placed in an acid-free envelope or pam bound will have the call number written on an acid-free flag and the barcode will be attached to the acid-free flag by Preservation personnel. Unbound rare serials are not barcoded.
