1.  INTRODUCTION

Apply instructions as found in section 2 of RDA and any other applicable instructions as well as instructions found in  Bibliographic Formats & Standards.  Assign subject headings from LC Subject Headings or from its distillation, Music Subject Headings, as well as Cataloging Service Bulletin.  Call numbers are created in accordance with LC Classification Schedules and Additions and Changes.

2.  EDITING COPY OR CREATING RECORDS

2.1  Fixed fields

Refer to Bibliographic Formats & Standards for required fixed field elements.

2.2  Variable fields

  • 020      ISBN-10; ISBN-13
  • 024      ISMN; UPC
  • 028      Publisher’s number or publisher’s plate number.  If both are present, enter both in separate 028 fields
  • 041      Languages of text and/or prefatory material
  • 090      Local call number
  • 1XX     Only the composer of the work can be entered in a 100 field (no longer can a principal performer be entered in a 1XX field)
  • 240      Uniform title

... the particular title by which a work is to be identified for cataloging purposes when the work has appeared under varying titles.  The purpose of the uniform title is to bring together records for a work entered under ... variant titles.

  • 245      Title of the work as it appears on the title page, cover or caption
  • 246      Varying forms of the title
  • 250      Edition statement and/or form of presentation
  • 264      Place, name of publisher, name of distributor, printing and copyright date (in 2 to 3 separate 264 fields)
  • 300      Physical description.  All pieces of music are now entered as a score whether for a single performer or 2 or more performers
  • 4XX     Series statements.
  • 5XX     Note fields as applicable to the item in hand
  • 6XX     Subject headings (usually describe the type of musical composition)
  • 7XX     Name added entries for librettists, translators, editors, etc. or Name/Title added entries for composer(s) and composition(s) found in the 245 but not listed in the 1XX or 240
  • 740      Title added entries for titles not appearing in the 245 or 246
  • 8XX     Name/Series added entries
