1.  DIRECT ACCESS ELECTRONIC RESOURCES

Call numbers.  CD-ROMs, DVD-ROMs and diskettes do not have their call number written on them. Instead, they are accompanied by a white flag with:

  • location
  • call number

*Accompanying materials.  *The call number is penciled on any printed guide or accompanying material that fits inside the case and circulates with the CD-ROM, DVD-ROM or diskette.

Holdings records.  MARC holdings records are not made for multiple-diskette or -disc computer files in one container; piece count reflects total number of CD-ROMS, DVD-ROMs or diskettes plus any printed guide in container.

Labels.  Dot label on jewel case enumerates contents if case contains guide or multiple CD-ROMs or DVD-ROMs (“+guide”, “2 discs”, etc) to alert Circulation staff. For CD-ROMs that are copied, a Rice University Library label is affixed to upper surface of the CD-ROM.

Barcode.  Place the barcode on the lower right front corner of jewel box or case containing the CD-ROM or DVD.

Jewel cases.  Optical discs (CD-ROMs and DVDs) shelved in Reserve are placed in jewel cases.

Installation software.  When the software includes an installation disc or diskette, the disc or diskette is copied in Cataloging and Metadata Services and the original disc or diskette is stored in Cataloging and Metadata Services, while the copy is sent with the other software to its designated location.
