1.  CALL NUMBERS

Visual materials do not have call numbers penciled on but are accompanied by a white flag with:

  • Location
  • Call number
  • “Non-standard format” if a videocassette or DVD requires special viewing equipment

2.  VIDEO CASES

Videocassettes and DVDs that come in sturdy plastic cases can remain in their original container.  If needed, plastic cases for DVDs are kept in the supply cabinets above the sink in Technical Services.  Cassette cases are available from Preservation Services.

3.  BARCODES

The barcode is placed on the front of the videocassette or DVD case, center toward the bottom right.

4.  GUIDES

A printed guide that fits inside the case and can be circulated with the video has the call number and control number penciled on and is reflected in the piece count.  A guide that is separate from the video-recording or is for more than one video-recording has a separate item record and barcode (for details see Video recording with a printed guide in Mixed Media)

After processing is complete place videorecordings on the appropriate shelf near the Marking Table.

5. VISUAL MATERIALS THAT ACCOMPANY WOODSON ITEMS.

If a DVD is accompanying a book that is being cataloged for the Woodson, then keep the DVD in the book. It will not be cataloged separately as the book will not be circulating.
