Section IV, Chapter F

Cataloging Sound Recordings

 

 

1.  INTRODUCTION

Apply AACR2, chapters 5 and 25, as well as LC Rules Interpretations and Bibliographic Formats & Standards.  Assign subject headings from LC Subject Headings or from its distillation, Music Subject Headings, as well as Cataloging Service Bulletin.  Call numbers are textual.

2.  EDITING COPY OR CREATING RECORDS

2.1  Fixed fields

 

Refer to Bibliographic Formats & Standards for required fixed field elements.

2.2  Variable fields

  • 007      This field appears in OCLC records and when a record is transferred into Sirsi it is translated into the fixed fields
  • 024      UPC number
  • 028      Sound recording issue number(s)
  • 041      Languages of sung text and printed accompanying materials
  • 1XX    In most cases the composer of the work
  • 240      Uniform title

... the particular title by which a work is to be identified for cataloging purposes when the work has appeared under varying titles.  The purpose of the uniform title is to bring together records for a work entered under ... variant titles.

  • 245      Title of the work as it appears on the item
  • 246      Varying forms of the title
  • 250      Edition statement
  • 260      Place, name of publisher, and date of publication
  • 300      Physical description.  In most cases this will be “sound disc(s).”   We still do receive the occasional “sound cassette(s).”
  • 4XX    Series statements.
  • 5XX    Note fields as found in AACR2, chapter 6.7
  • 511      Note field listing all the performers on a given recording
  • 6XX    Subject headings usually describe the type of musical composition
  • 700      Name added entries for librettists, translators, editors, etc. or Name/Title added entries for composer(s) and composition(s) found in the 245 and/or in the 505 but not listed in the 1XX or 240
  • 710      Corporate added entries for names of performing organizations
  • 740      Title added entries for titles not appearing in the 245 or 246
  • 8XX    Name/Series added entries
