Items 40 centimeters tall or wide are considered oversize (except in Brown Library where different standards prevail (see Item Types—Defined and Described).

“OVERSIZE” is included as part of the call number, both on the title page and on the spine label.  “OVERSIZE” appears at the head of the call number, after any other special location, such as “Reference”.

Decisions as to whether or not new items go into the Oversize Area are made by the catalogers or Preservation.  Single volumes have item type OVERSIZE or OVERSIZE-R.  If more than one-fourth of the volumes of a set or serial are oversize, all of the set or serial is shelved in the Oversize Area.  If less than one-fourth of the volumes of a set or serial are oversize, only the oversized volumes are shelved in the Oversize Area.  The location information is given in the MARC holdings record in the following form:

866:41: |80 |a v.1 (1970)-v.20 (1990) |z Oversize: v.12, 14

If there is also an analytic record for an oversize volume which is part of a set or serial, oversize information appears on the record for the analytic as well as on the set or serial record.
